As we all know, there is a growing need for the pub industry to find new products to reduce the negative impact on the environment, even plastic straws.
These days, there’s no shortage of alternatives to single-use plastic straws in cocktails. Here we list a few alternatives to plastic straws and help you analyze why they are good and bad as alternatives.
Paper straw
They are probably the most popular alternative to plastic straws at the moment, and the choice of many of the biggest takeout beverage companies. Starbucks, for example, has replaced plastic straws with 100 percent recyclable paper straws in Shanghai and Shenzhen, and hopes to make them a standard option in all Starbucks stores across China by the end of 2019.
advantages
Convenience – this is the main reason we rely so much on single-use plastics.
The price is cheap.
If you do need to use disposable products, this is the most environmentally friendly option. Most paper straws are biodegradable, and some are compostable.
disadvantages
Paper straws quickly become soggy and soft, potentially affecting the drinking experience.
Many types of paper straws are still treated with plastic additives or dyed with unenvironmentally friendly colorants — not all are biodegradable.
Making paper straws still consumes natural resources — after all, paper comes from trees.
Metal suction
Easy to buy, beautiful to look at, and without getting soft or sticky — this is one of our favorite reusable straws.
advantages
Fashion and elegant, charming temperament.
Extremely strong and durable — especially stainless steel straws — and therefore rarely requires constant updating.
The price is relatively reasonable and easy to get.
disadvantages
Not easy to clean. Metal straws can be dishwasher-cleaned, but they are often inadequate, and hand washing is time-consuming.
Some low quality metal straws may produce a metallic taste in the mouth.
